Home-schooler account

Microsoft – Minecraft: Education Edition server activation
» 3-4 business days

[A business day is considered a full day, Monday to Friday, exclusive of observed holidays]
Frequently Asked Questions

Parent / Student

All accounts - Parent, Student, Group or Mentor - are for one year and will renew automatically on the registration anniversary date until the subscription is cancelled.

Generally speaking, there are no costs beyond your annual Account fee for Virtual Field Trips, Subject Matter Expert Webinars, or the College Fair.

We will say here that "we reserve the right to charge a fee" but that is only to cover ourselves legally in the future.

If you enter into an agreement with other Group teachers or  Mentors who teach remotely there may be fees involved. That is strictly between you and these other parties and has nothing to do with us.

Online Registration accepts credit cards and debit cards. For other payment types (checks, money orders, purchase orders) download and complete a Printed Registration form and follow the instructions.

We have many training resources (especially video-based) available for all of our users: Student, Parent, Group and Mentor.

We also coordinate with the Microsoft 365 Education team to provide live training webinars for all account holders. This is the same level training Microsoft provides to school districts for professional development, or PD, of teachers and staff.

We encourage adult account holders to subscribe to our free monthly enewsletter for updates to our offerings and those from Microsoft, since they are always improving and adding features.

At least one desktop, laptop, notebook, tablet and/or smartphone is required. These can be Windows®, iOS®, or Chrome® OS devices. In addition, a good Internet connection is required when connecting to Microsoft 365 for Education cloud-based resources or attending virtual field trips, for example. All major Internet browsers are supported.

A few of the Microsoft 365 for Education apps, such as Office Lens, require a smartphone to use. These apps must be downloaded separately from the Apple Apps Store or Google Play, depending on your mobile device.

Theoretically, a single Parent or Student account could be shared with all family members living under the same roof. However, as the purpose of the Student account is for each student to keep track of their own assignments, grades, tests, etc. it is in the best interest of everyone for each student to have their own account. This is one of the reasons why Student accounts are priced so much less than the Parent account.

Firstly, Home-schooler.com creates and hosts our own content. We also have other partnerships which allow us to create learning opportunities not found anywhere else - including with Microsoft.

As for the Microsoft products themselves, Microsoft 365 for Education has taken the products in their personal or business line and added many digital learning features - making it a superior digital learning platform. Because these are unique education features we urge our subscribers to use our free training resources to learn how to get the most out of your account.

Group

Online Registration accepts credit cards and debit cards. For other payment types (checks, money orders, purchase orders) download and complete a Printed Registration form and follow the instructions.

Yes. The Group account holder is responsible for anything in terms of being paid, scheduling classes, etc. We are only making it possible for students outside of one family to be included in a larger group. As this is designed for Co-ops or Enrichment Programs, the idea here is that the instructor and students have a familiar relationship already.

While both allow someone to instruct and interact with a home-school student outside their own family, the Group account is really intended to supplement in-person instruction. If circumstances warrant (weather, the Shutdown of 2020, etc.) instruction could flip to entirely remote with little effort. As Co-ops and Enrichment Programs are primarily intended for in-person instruction a Group account is the ideal choice for an instructor.

Yes, we offer integration with the Canvas LMS system and are an Instructure partner. If your Enrichment Program is evaluating LMS systems we strongly urge you to consider Canvas. They are the best, hands down. Get in touch and we will be glad to help you.

Mentor

Online Registration accepts credit cards and debit cards. For other payment types (checks, money orders, purchase orders) download and complete a Printed Registration form and follow the instructions.

The Mentor account has an option for the Microsoft Minecraft for Education app. This is something we want to encourage because we know few home-school parents would be able to teach this. We will gladly help with any advanced tracks like this (STEM, robotics, etc.).

To allow ourselves latitude we must say that "we reserve the right to limit the content on the platform".

That said, one of the beautiful things about home-schooling is that families can decide for themselves the way they want their children to be educated. We do not want to get in the way of that.

Some topics are "hot button" and divisive and were the reason some choose to home-school. Home-school groups (co-op, enrichment or mentor) by their very nature are voluntary in participation (unlike compulsory education in public schools) so we believe the Mentor program is ideal for supporting diverse education tracks as well as traditional subjects with advanced study.
